Introduction to Couponing Workshops

I am so excited! This Friday and Saturday, Janurary 20 & 21,2012, I have two separate workshops scheduled from 1:00 to 4:00. We will discuss the basics of couponing, put together a coupon accordion file for whole inserts, and a coupon binder for clipped coupons. You will also receive 2 sets of inserts from the last 8 weeks in which coupon inserts were in the local newspaper. So, even as a newbie couponer, you will be prepared with a stash of coupons from the last 8 weeks, ready to slash 30 to 50% from your grocery bill! The cost is $15 and you need to bring a 3 inch binder, a package of baseball card protectors, an accordion file or box, a pair of scissors and a stapler! I thought I would share with you one of my favorite books about saving money and being thrifty: The Complete Tightwad Gazette. The book is really a compilation of three previous "Tightwad" books. The author, Amy Dacyczyn (pronounce decision), wrote a "Thrifty" newsletter in the 90's and compiled the books from her newsletters. Interestingly enough, she was not, at the time of writing her newsletters, a coupon shopper. However, the newsletters she wrote were full of helpful information about being a good steward of both time and money. She was an advocate of using a price book to ensure one was getting the best deal on everything purchased and she recommended stocking up when one found the rock bottom price. Her methods were not unlike any effective coupon shopper. As you can see, from the condition of my copy, it is a much loved resource in my home. Darby, my 16 year old daughter, also  loves thumbing through it to pick up ideas. We even arranged her life management course around one of the volumes.

Since one of the tools she advocates using is the price book page and because I have mentioned the use of a price book page in conjunction with your coupon binder in my coupon class, here's a link to a printable price book page from organized home.

"The Money Saving Mom's Budget" by Crystal Paine

Money Saving Mom, Crystal Paine, has written a book that I am really looking forward to reading entitled The Money Saving Mom's Budget. Budgeting is a vital topic that most of us really don't like to think about. However, none of us can ever get our financial house in order unless we know how much we are spending then  prepare and stick to a budget that gets us where we want to go financially.

An Update on the Coupon Box

I have to confess that the coupon box method is not going to work for me. It seems that using the file box and my trusty binder is going to continue to be my preferred hybrid method. I can't seem to change from that visual, page-turning binder method. I guess I am going to have to just put in the extra time required to slip the cut coupon in the binder as opposed to dropping them behind a tab in a box. I do still love my file box that I constructed from fabric and cereal boxes...it will serve me well with my binder!

Coupon Class

Last Thursday, December 29, 2011, at 1:00 I had such a fabulous time sharing some couponing basics with a great group of ladies at my first couponing class!
